So LinkedIn and other Social Media feeds me what seems like every single post on recruiting, job searching and networking that is posted…but most of them are filled with advice for people who are currently searching for jobs. If you’re lucky enough to be currently employed, investing some time now will pay big dividends in the future.

When you’re a job seeker, a strong network is worth it’s weight in gold. What makes me so sure? Because when I need to fill a position quickly, the first thing I do is reach out to my network. Why? Because I trust the people I know, and I know they’ll connect me with top-notch talent.

While I don’t have the stats in front of me, I believe the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of people are not currently working at their “last job”. Even if you love what you do, the chance that you’ll find either your desires changing or your company’s direction changing at some point in the future are extremely high. That means, eventually, you’ll find yourself looking for your next opportunity. When that day comes, the jobs you ACTUALLY WANT are rarely advertised. They’re filled through word-of-mouth, referrals, and good old-fashioned networking. Your network is your secret weapon.

But here’s the kicker: the best time to start networking isn’t when you’re desperately searching for a job. It’s when you’re already employed and happily cruising along. Why? Because when you’re not actively looking, you’re not desperate. You’re relaxed, confident, and genuinely interested in connecting with people.

STAY IN TOUCH: Networking is a long game. Stay in touch with your connections, even if you don’t need anything from them right now. A quick email or coffee chat can go a long way.

Where most people lose the script is thinking networking has to involve driving across town, sitting in a stuffy meeting hall and eating bad rubber chicken while shaking hands and kissing babies (I know that’s what I used to think). Networking isn’t about collecting business cards or adding random people on LinkedIn. It’s about building authentic relationships with people who share your interests and values:

ATTEND INDUSTRY EVENTS: Conferences, workshops, and meetups are great places to meet new people and expand your network. These days, they’re often virtual!

BE ACTIVE ON LINKEDIN (AND OTHER SOCIALS): Share your thoughts, engage with others, and build your online presence. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for networking and career advancement.

And the biggest, most important thing you can do:

GIVE FIRST AND GIVE MORE THAN YOU TAKE: Don’t just reach out when you need something. Offer your help, share your expertise, and be a valuable resource to others.

So, don’t wait until you’re laid off or desperately seeking a new job. Start building your network today. You’ll thank me later.
