This is the first and most important question you should ask, but most founders are stuck in revenue creation mode (and they probably should be!). If you have 6 minutes, take the quiz below. Take it honestly. DON’T skip to the bottom and look at what the scores might mean. When you’re done, you’ll KNOW if it’s time to get in touch with me.

Fred’s 15-Point Fractional Ops Leader Readiness Checklist

Score each item below from 0-2 points:

0= No / Not true
1= Partly true / Inconsistent
2= Yes / Consistently true

1) The “Glue” Work (Founder Trap)
Do you spend 15+ hours/week on internal coordination, manual handoffs, or putting out fires instead of strategy? (0-2)

2) Revenue Predictability
Is less than 60% of your revenue coming from predictable, recurring, or repeat customers? (Are you chasing new revenue constantly?) (0-2)

3) Delivery Bottleneck
Is your growth restricted because you can’t deliver fast enough, rather than not having enough leads? (0-2)

4) Quality/Rework Rate
Do 5%+ of your projects/orders require rework or cause client escalations? (0-2)

5) Speed to Market
Is your lead-to-cash or delivery time slowing down, and you’ve noticed it for 2+ months? (0-2)

6) Hidden Margin Leaks
Do you suspect you’re losing 3-10 points of margin to scope creep, discounts, or unbilled team hours? (0-2)

7) Operational Consistency (SOPs)
Do you have processes documented, but the team rarely follows them, leading to inconsistent outputs? (0-2)

8) Meeting Effectiveness
Do you hold weekly meetings, but find them to be “status updates” that rarely drive decisions or accountability? (0-2)

9) Coordination Overhead
Is the complexity of your team (3-12 people) causing high coordination overhead, where you feel like a project manager? (0-2)

10) Management Burden
Are you, the founder, still the direct manager for most of your team? (Do you need a manager layer within 60 days?) (0-2)

11) Execution Bottleneck
Do you have a massive backlog of “good ideas” while current projects stall at 70% completion? (0-2)

12) Data Visibility
Is it painful to get a clear picture of your key metrics (KPIs) weekly because your data is scattered across tools? (0-2)

13) Vendor/Partner Complexity
Do you have too many contractors or suppliers causing inconsistent quality and high management overhead? (0-2)

14) Customer Experience Risk
Is your onboarding or delivery becoming inconsistent, putting you at risk of churn or refund requests? (0-2)

15) Operational Risk/Exposure
Do you handle sensitive data (PII, payments, compliance) and feel exposed by a lack of formal process? (0-2)

Interpreting Your Score
0-11: You’re not ready. You’ll get more use from lean systems, a mid-level Ops Manager, or a project-based consultant.
12-19: Borderline. We can run a 30-60 day diagnostic sprint with a limited scope and clear ROI targets before we commit to a longer engagement.
20-30: Ready. A Fractional Operations leader can likely drive noticeable results in 3-6 months (and beyond).
