Many of the leaders I’ve talked to recently are lamenting their need to find more “high quality” candidates:
“I just can’t attract the right talent!”
“Nobody wants to work anymore!”
“I keep losing my top performers!”
If you’re catching yourself nodding with agreement or shaking your head in shared frustration, I’m sorry to tell you that YOU and YOUR COMPANY are probably PART OF THE PROBLEM.
High-quality candidates have more than one or two things in common:
– They will demand HIGH but FAIR financial compensation for their level of worth and experience and they will negotiate hard to get it
– They will insist on a reasonably short and transparent hiring process
– They think your ATS is garbage (they are correct) and aren’t likely to respect your insistence that it’s important
– If you can’t show them a clear path to professional development, they will look for someone else who will
– They will not subordinate their own personal mission to your company’s mission until you PROVE that you’re worth it
– If they can’t learn something from you, they won’t work for your for long
– Most importantly, they expect to GET as much as they GIVE (salary, benefits, PTO, continuous learning, QUALITY culture, etc.)
So when you find yourself wondering why you can’t attract best-in-class talent, stop for a second and ask yourself: do I deserve it?
